As many as 20,000 members of the national Guard could be deployed to Washington D.C. for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden on January 21st. Sources report that with the escalating threat level, defense officials are concerned about the potential use of explosives at the capital.
The Secret Service is taking charge of security planning in the week leading up to the inauguration as there is increased concern that more violent mobs are encouraged to attack after the recent success in breaching the Capitol. As such, the National Guard and law enforcement are on the lookout for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) like pipe bombs or perhaps Molotov cocktails.
Sources report chatter among pro-Trump extremists that there are plans to surround the Capitol before the inauguration takes place. Therefore the plan has been to expand the road blocks around the area out further than in past years, and to deploy increased security measures, hence the 20,000 National Guard troops.
The Secret Service seems prepared to secure the inauguration and the capital city, with the assistance of the National Guard, and are intent upon contending with any potential security problems. The overall goal, of course, being that the process of democracy and the transfer of power can be carried out diligently and on time.
