Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said Thursday he would “absolutely” support former President Donald Trump if he became the GOP presidential nominee in 2024.

Just a few weeks ago, McConnell expressed sharp disapproval of Trump after the US Capitol insurrection earlier this year. He went as far as suggesting that the former President should be prosecuted, stating that “Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day.” McConnell later voted to acquit Trump during his second impeachment.

And even though they have stated wanting brilliant, thoughtful and compassionate leadership, it seems as if McConnell, and many other Republicans, will support anyone who is outside of the opposing Democratic party.

According to the polls, it’s clear that Trump still remains popular and is currently the GOP’s center of gravity. Many members of the GOP, even those who condemn and disapprove of the former president, believe that if Trump runs for the presidential election in 2024, he will win the Republican nomination by a landslide.
