In a new Netflix series that documents the couple’s separation from the royal family and criticizes British media and societal racism they believe has fueled coverage of their relationship, Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan, adhere to a well-worn script.

The first three episodes of “Harry and Meghan,” which were released on Thursday, analyze the symbiotic relationship between tabloid media and the royal family as well as the history and current state of racism in the British Empire.

Interviews with the couple, their friends, and media and racial bias experts are used to tell the story. There are no opposing viewpoints in the series, and none of the media outlets mentioned have commented.

Harry says in one of the episodes, “In this family sometimes, you know, you’re part of the problem rather than part of the solution.” “Unconscious bias is prevalent on a very large scale. Unconscious bias has the drawback that no one is responsible for it. However, after it has been acknowledged or located within you, you must make it right.

When the couple left the royal life almost three years ago and relocated to Southern California, their complaints centered on the media’s treatment of Meghan and what they perceived to be a lack of sympathy from royal institutions about the coverage. Their new life in the affluent neighborhood of Montecito has been made possible thanks to lucrative contracts with Spotify and Netflix.

The Netflix series is the couple’s most recent attempt to tell their story after a series of interviews with U.S. media outlets, most notably a two-hour sit down in 2021 with Oprah Winfrey. It was promoted with two dramatically edited trailers that alluded to a “war against Meghan.”

One British-based analyst came to the conclusion that the primary audience Harry and Meghan are attempting to reach is in the United States after watching the first three episodes, which offer little new in the way of royal intrigue.

According to David Haigh, chief executive of Brand Finance, which has examined the monarchy’s value to the UK economy, the series is an attempt by Harry and Meghan to establish their place in American society, where fame and fortune await.

“They are trying to become the next Kardashian family. And they are using the fame and notoriety of the monarchy as their steppingstone to get there,” he said. “No one would take the remotest bit of interest in either of them if they weren’t strongly associated with the UK monarchy.”

The start of the series is significant for the monarchy. King Charles III is attempting to demonstrate that the institution still has a place in society following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, whose personal appeal during her 70-year reign tempered criticism of the crown. By meeting with many of the ethnic and religious groups that make up contemporary Britain in the early years of his reign, Charles is arguing that the House of Windsor can help unify a country that is becoming more and more diverse.

The royal family’s 2018 union with the biracial American actress Meghan Markle was once hailed as a public relations victory, supporting the monarchy’s efforts to modernize by becoming more representative of a multicultural society. The fairy tale, which started with a celebrity-studded ceremony at Windsor Castle, quickly turned sour amid reports in the British media that Meghan was conceited and mistreated her staff.

The three hour-long episodes of the new show, which debuted on Thursday, aim to refute that thesis. On December 15, three more are due.
