Following a premiere episode that gave Inuyasha fans a glimpse at what the original set of characters have been up to since that series ended, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon delivered a new installment that actually focuses on the new generation of half-demons.
Episode 2, titled the “Three Princesses,” informs viewers how Setsuna, Towa and Moroha became a team… sort of.
The episode begins in feudal Japan with Setsuna and Towa as children. Towa narrates how the twin sisters were inseparable as children. One day, while sleeping in the forest, a fire breaks out and the two children try to escape.
Towa instinctively runs ahead of Setsuna before realizing she has left her sister behind. She runs back to get her and when they are reunited, a burning tree is about to collapse on them. Setsuna notices this and pushes her sister away as it falls. Towa jumps over the tree, but Setsuna is gone and we can only hear her cries for help in the distance. Towa tries to find her sister, but is suddenly sucked into a portal.
This is where the second episode splits, as we get to see what happens with Towa, Setsuna and Moroha in separate timelines.
When the young half-demon is thrown from the portal, she arrives in front of a tree. Towa realizes that this isn’t the same place where she came from when Sota, Kagome’s brother from the present day, finds her.
Seeing Towa, Sota immediately realizes that she’s not from this time and takes her in. Sota tells Towa that he will help her find Setsuna, but 10 years pass and in that time, the young half-demon becomes a part of this new family.
Now 14 years old, Towa is starting a new school. She has been kicked out of various schools due to fighting, which started when she stopped a bully a few years ago.
Towa still has her demon powers, but promised Sota when she was younger that she wouldn’t use them. However, she doesn’t need them to take out a gang of bullies on her way to school.
The group, after losing the fight, say that they will get their older brother to deal with Towa.
Later in the episode, Mei, Sota’s daughter and Towa’s step-sister, is kidnapped by the group of bullies. Towa goes to their grandfather’s shrine to find her elders and Mei tied up to a statue. The group of guys surround Towa and threaten to scar Mei’s face with a knife if she fights back. Towa takes a beating before she decides to use her demon powers to quickly get the knife-wielding bully away from Mei. The bullies then hear police sirens in the distance and leave.
SETSUNA AND MOROHA
In the second episode, we see Moroha (the daughter of Inuyasha and Kagome), surrounded by Hisui (the son of Sango and Miroku), Kohaku and other demon hunters.
They want to bring Moroha in for an unknown reason, but the young half-demon isn’t going down without a fight. She pulls out a small clam that holds a red pearl, when she is stopped by Setsuna.
As a child, Setsuna was shown to be soft-spoken and kind, but here she’s much colder. She threatens Moroha when a giant centipede demon emerges from the ground looking for the Rainbow Pearls. It attacks and eventually swallows Moroha’s red pearl, making it more powerful.
Moroha uses her bow to shoot enchanted arrows to try and seal the demon away, which shocks the demon hunters nearby. She is unsuccessful, though.
Later on in the episode, Setsuna captures the demon in a technique, when Moroha stops the attack so she can kill it. This distraction causes Setsuna to be captured and the demon to extract Setsuna’s gold pearl. After swallowing the second pearl, the demon grows even stronger.
However, the Tree of Ages, which is nearby, calls out, saying that it hasn’t felt the presence of the Rainbow Pearls in years and opens up a portal, sucking Moroha, Setsuna and the demon in.
The portal sends the three to where Towa is at the shrine and the young half-demon immediately recognizes Setsuna. The centipede demon senses the silver pearl in Towa and goes to get it. Towa tries to attack the demon with her sword, but it breaks at the hilt when she tries to attack, just as the episode ends.
We learned a lot about Towa in the second episode, and we’ll continue to learn about her, Setsuna and Moroha in the coming episodes. The preview for episode 3 shows Towa and Setsuna reunited, but the latter doesn’t remember her sister, so we’ll likely see what happened in the 10 years since they were split.
A new episode of Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon streams every Saturday on Funimation, Crunchyroll and Hulu.
